Denver Woman's Press Club

Her beautiful and serene portrait has graced the DWPC Clubhouse for decades. But what do you really know about Mary Elitch Long, Denver’s “First Lady of Fun?”

In the 1890s, she was the only woman in the world to own and operate a zoo – right here in Denver. She created an amusement park beloved by generations and the longest running summer stock theatre in America. Mary may not have been much of a writer, but she was admired and adored by many of the Woman’s Press Club founders and stalwarts for her generous heart. Spend a morning with Mary, as portrayed by biographer Debra Faulkner.
