When Cathie Beck was thirty-nine, her kids moved out, her boyfriend dumped her, and her friends moved away. Lonely, she placed a newspaper ad announcing she was forming a group called WOW: Women on the Way—to an insane asylum, rehab, whatever. She wasn’t the only one yearning to connect: her phone wouldn’t stop ringing. She invited six women to a meeting in her home. One walked into her heart and stayed. Cathie and Denise formed one of those meteoric friendships that change your life. Traditional publishers initially rejected Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship, but when Cathie’s self-published book became a hit, the phone started ringing again. The memoir found a home at Voice, a new Hyperion imprint. Join us at the Denver Woman’s Press Club as Cathie shares the power of female friendship, women writers, and cheap wine. Our writing contests…

Unknown Writers Contest

Contest is open to both men and women who are Colorado residents, age 18 or older. Entrants must never have been professionally published. Contestants may not have won first place in prior year's competitions.

Categories include short-form fiction, nonfiction essays and poetry. Rules will be published on this site in January, and the contest deadline usually falls in February every year.

In House Writing Contest

This competition is open to current members of the Denver Woman’s Press Club only. Categories include fiction, nonfiction personal experiences and feature articles, poetry, ultra-short novel, blog entry and editorial rant, although the categories may change from year to year.

The Denver Woman’s Press Club (DWPC), founded in 1898, is one of the oldest women’s press clubs in the nation. But we’re far from old-fashioned!

Our more than 200 members are professional writers all—including journalists, novelists, magazine editors, essayists, freelance writers, poets, historians, and corporate and mass communications specialists.
