Making Ambition Fashionable

2:07 pm in News by Lydia Rueger

DWPC member Heidi Olinger founded the lifestyle apparel company Pretty Brainy in 2008 with the goal of encouraging ‘tween and teen girls to pursue their heart’s desire, including fields in which women are still few in number or rarely lead. Heidi uses writing as a design element in girls’ and women’s apparel with this goal in mind.

Currently, Heidi is working on what she calls the “Science You Can Love T.” “My goal is to show off the beauty of astrophysics and astronomy,” she says. “For girls 13 to 18, the design will take science out of the classroom and show its purpose in the real world. Right now at Pretty Brainy I focus on science an math because a majority of girls eventually lose their enthusiasm for these subjects, usually in adolescence.”

A former educator, Heidi holds degrees in Journalism and English, and is the recipient of several awards for student-centered teaching, including the Boettcher Foundation Award. In 2010, she received the top honor from the Mom’s Choice Awards for her designs of Pretty Brainy girls’ printed T-shirts. She speaks to women’s and girls’ groups, nonprofit organizations and educators on identifying your heroic mission and embodying success.

Online Site Touts Denver/Boulder “Living on the Cheap”

5:10 pm in News by Laura Daily

Motivated by the current coupon-clipping climate, everyone is asking “how can we save money and still enjoy our lives?” Since 2009, DWPC member Laura Daily and Boulder freelancer Claire Walter have provided answers to that question every day. Mile High on the Cheap helps Denver/Boulder residents and tourists find daily deals, bargains and freebies of all sorts.

What distinguishes Mile High On The Cheap is that the site is updated daily with 8 to 12 new posts. Daily and Walter don’t charge for posts, so welcome any and all deals, discounts, freebies or even low-cost workshops that DWPC members, their families and friends might know about. “We couldn’t cover so much ground, without so many people sending us tips and leads,” says Daily. Mile High On the Cheap has even included DWPC events such as the jewelry sale.

In two years, MHOTC has grown to more than 5,300 subscribers who receive a daily digest of all deals posted during the previous 24 hours and also welcomes 2,500 to 3,000 individual visitors a day. MHOTC was named the “Best Website for Bargain Hunters” by Westword in 2010, was one of four bargain websites included in the June 2010 issue of 5280 Magazine and in November 2010 received Best Service Site honors in Westword’s first-ever web awards. Founders Laura Daily and Claire Walter have been interviewed on every Denver television station, numerous local radio stations and are now doing the “library lecture” circuit, sharing their expertise.

“People have always kidded me that I was a Jedi Warrior in the world of shopping,” says Daily who writes regularly for AARP Magazine and Consumer Reports Money Adviser. “When I heard about the concept I jumped on the chance to launch it in Denver and asked Claire, a long-time Boulder resident with a special interest in food and snow sports to come along for the ride. The idea is brilliant in its simplicity.”
